Do you like the fabrics in this pillow?
Unfortunately most of these well loved fabrics are no longer available for purchase.
All of these prints were done by the ladies of Ruby Star Society. I believe there are about five women who formerly designed for Cotton & Steel Fabrics. They switched companies and now design for Ruby Star Society (a branch of Moda.)
In a nutshell, I have found a number of the fabrics in this pillow still available at Fresh Modern Fabrics on Etsy. Use her search box and type in Cotton and Steel. You may find a few of these.
BUT, even though these fabrics are out of print, there are new fabrics often available by Ruby Star Society. They’re prints are often whimsical and fun. They’re not prints I’d usually use for a bedspread in the master bedroom, but they’re perfect for a playroom or child’s bedroom…or an eclectic and fun family room.
(You can see a number of Ruby Star Society prints I just purchased in my previous post.)
You’ll be sure to find some bright color when you shop Ruby Star Society Fabrics. I searched for a few shops that carry a good variety of Ruby Star Society Fabrics.
Here are a few places to browse for their prints:
Handmade is Heartmade (this is where I most recently purchased mine)
Fat Quarter Shop
Kimberly Kight Studio (she is one of the designers for Ruby Star Society)
Fresh Modern Fabric
So now onto this pillow.
How did I make this pillow? Here’s a tutorial for how to sew with triangles:
I used 5 1/2 inch strips to cut these triangles. I mentioned it before on here, but don’t just dive into sewing with triangles without learning how first. I made that mistake a long time ago. Triangles aren’t quite as simple as squares in my opinion.
I used my favorite metal zippers from Zipit. I purchase the 16 inch brass YKK zippers in white or ivory. (I recently made my first zipper purchase from Sullivan’s Trim since Zipit had to close due to the Covid Virus.)

And last but not least…hand quilting. Even though my project completion times are all delayed these days, I have no plans to stop hand quilting soon. I love it. It’s slow and it’s monotonous, but I haven’t regretted dedicating the time to it.

If you’ve been following along here for any length of time, you know my posting isn’t very often, and I don’t keep many pillows stocked in my Etsy Shop. The other blessings in my life keep me from dedicating too much time to this space.
But this was one of those pillows that sold in my shop less than five minutes after posting it. It brought a smile to my face. I hope it is well loved where it found a new place in a children’s playroom!
