Rarely have I bought additional fabric to finish a quilt. If I start to run low on fabric for a quilt, I tend to add in something new that is already sitting on my shelves. Some of my favorite quilts end up being those with combinations that I’d never thinking for putting together initially.
This case was different. I’m actually really REALLY liking how these fabrics are working together in my scrappy trip around the world quilt. Since I was running low on a few of these fabrics, I started throwing in a few others that I thought were working well. After I made an additional six or so blocks with different fabrics, I realized I didn’t like how they were working.
THANKFULLY, I was able to find almost all of these fabrics still available. Unfortunately, I had to pay shipping from five or six different fabric shops.
Since so much of my joy in quilting comes from seeing and feeling so many of these gorgeous fabrics, it was a bit of a bummer to spend additional money on fabrics I have already seen and touched.
I felt I was going to somewhat ruin this quilt with addition of other fabrics though.
Off I went to hunt around.
I started looking first for the below feedsack flower clusters. I highly doubted I’d be able to find this one.
I did find it! I have never shopped at Stitch N Frame Quilt Shop, but after looking over their site a bit, I decided to try them out…especially since they had some of my beloved Feedsack fabric.
I believe the full name for this sweet yellow floral print is Feedsack Flower Cluster in Yellow by Windham Fabrics. It looks like they have a bit over five yards still in stock.
This shipping was prompt. I never received a confirmation email for my order, but I called to check on it, and the lady was kind to help me on the phone.
Next up, I re-purchased:
1. Strawberry Moon Honey Roseberry by Michael Miller
2. Junebug Orange Pears by Dear Stella
3. Farm Girl Rose Trellis by Riley Blake
These were all purchases on Etsy. I linked to each shop above. I had never shopped at any of these smaller vendors but everything arrived safely and as expected.
You can’t find a lot of Heather Ross fabric waiting around for purchase. The above is Tiger Lily roses in pink.
I also bought more of the Tiger Lily Fabric (pictured above with the arrow). It is the creamy one with the floral wreaths.
As mentioned in this post, I’m using the tutorial by Quiltville to make my Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt. It’s an extremely handy tutorial. I can’t say my blocks are going together quickly, but bit by bit I’m making progress.
This is one of those stacks of fabric that I’ve had sitting on my shelf for almost two years. I couldn’t decide what I wanted to make with the stack. Two things I learned:
1. I did eventually come across the perfect pattern for the fabrics. I’m glad I waited until I was comfortable with my decision.
2. I loved these fabrics as much as I did two years ago. I’ve been known to buy some fabrics and then grow less fond of them after a bit. These are an exception. None of these fabrics are new. They are older lines, but I think they’re as pretty as they were the day they were released.
It’s hard to not get caught up in the whirlwind of new fabrics every couple months, but just like anything in life, I have to reign in my immediate desires and remember long term…I really don’t need much fabric.
(I’m sure any of you who love to quilt and sew know understand what I mean about having too much fabric. 😉 )
Finally, what are my favorite shops to browse these days for fabrics?
Modern Violet – great small shop for fun Heather Ross prints.
Fresh Modern Fabrics – large variety of fabrics with many prints.
Morgan Kelly Quilts – a great place for fabric bundles. Since she doesn’t carry a high selection of fabric, it’s a good shop to browse if you’re overwhelmed easily.
Sew Organic – excellent experience with customer service & all organic fabrics.
Field and Cloth – perfectly curated selection of rich and textured fabrics.
Kiwi Fabric – wide variety of many fabrics. Fast shipping.
Fabric.com – great when buying multiple yards for backing.
Polka Dot Secrets – lots of florals and real pictures of the fabrics.
I’m keeping you all posted via Instagram on my progress. I’m kind of flip flopping back and forth between my half square triangle quilt, the Dresden plate quilt, and this one.
And, if you are in to Instagram stories, I’ve been posting a couple times a week with some real life adventures. You’ll see a lot of pictures of my boys and family…all the behind the quilting scenes of life.
