My husband made the comment to me the other day. He said, ‘Everyone is comfortable at their grandma’s house, right?’
I totally agreed.
Our conversations recently have been submersed in thoughts about community and friends and boundaries and close friends and acquaintances and friends with history and friends we’ve recently met. We’ve had a collision of worlds in our lives and with that collision has come many blessings and many questions and many conversations.
We’ve had more people in our home in the last two weeks than we’ve had in the last six months. Our world was flooded with paths that were crossing at opportune times.
We will soon have a group of people coming over to sing. We’ll sing hymns and more hymns. More people to look forward to soon!
As we embarked upon this unforeseen month of relationships, we asked ourselves what makes people feel loved and welcomed in our home.
Caring about them, right? Asking them questions. Letting them talk. Then asking more questions. Not judging them. Listening. Remembering that everyone is a person with a past and with emotions and with thoughts.
It was through these conversations that my husband said, ‘Everyone is comfortable going to their grandma’s home, right?’
Yes.
When I first bought this Outback Wife fabric by Gertrude Made, I loved it. I hoarded it and couldn’t dare to cut into it. My mom was over one afternoon, and I showed my mom the fabric.
Her first response was, ‘That fabric reminds me of my grandma’s curtains.’
So as we began this month of lots of extra feet walking through our home, we decided to make our home feel like everyone’s grandma’s home.
The couch is appropriately covered in Outback Wife Elaine in orange. My curtain was changed out to Anna in teal, and our pillow sits happily perched in the widow seat.
The changes bring an appropriate warmth to our home with colder weather coming, but I hope they serve me as a reminder to love those like a grandma coming in and out of our home this season.
Outback Wife is getting harder and harder to find available for purchase, but after a quick search on Etsy, it does look like some of it is still available. 🙂
love this thoughtful post! you are so right!!
🙂 Thanks Karen!
