I broke my year long fabric fast this month.
I love fabric. I thoroughly enjoy browsing the designs and learning about the designers and their inspiration. They’re artists, and I appreciate that about them.
Almost every six months there’s a whole new wave of fabrics. Seeing the new fabrics is always exciting, but I was finding myself a bit trapped. There were so many fabrics to buy! I knew, though, that my fabric stash was growing too fast. I couldn’t keep up. I had to learn to enjoy the fabrics by just looking.
Acorns on gray | Eggs on blue | Strawberries on copper | Chickens on gray | Acorns on blue | Strawberries on peach
I found a good excuse to finally buy some of the Welsummer Fabric I had been eyeing. I’ve watched this fabric and was hoping to someday add it to my Cotton + Steel fabric stack that will someday be sewn into half square rectangles.
As you see above, we have some little chicks now. They’ll stay a bit longer at our house, and then we’ll take them out to grandma and grandpa’s. My parents only live three miles or so from us, and we agreed to make the short trip three days a week to care for them. My mom will do the rest.
I’m not much of an animal person. This was a big step for me to agree to take some responsibility for something besides children right now. 🙂
We’ll begin homeschooling my oldest in the fall, and one of our goals for the semester is for him to recount three or four experiences and stories with his pets. Step one was to acquire some pets. I briefly talked with my dad telling him my quandary.
Soon after that conversation he had decided it was okay for us to house some chickens at their rural home.
Problem one solved.
Then I bought fabric.
I know.
Raising chickens and buying fabric doesn’t probably have much connection for you. Fabric and quilting seemingly infiltrates much of my life, and owning chickens seemed like a really good reason to buy chicken fabric.
I purchased these fabrics from Bee Handmade Boutique on Etsy. I had never bought from this small fabric shop before, but they were great. I had no trouble.
I added both these strawberry prints to my purchase. Strawberry fabrics are hard ones for me to pass up, and I enjoy the informality of the shapes here. They’re perfect in simplicity.
These little prints are perfect for fussy cutting. I’m anxious to cut into them, but I have a few other works in progress to finish first.
I also picked up this sweet mouse print in pink to possibly add to a quilt I’m making to gift to a friend.
I’m thankful for these warm spring days outside. The children are out almost all day every day. Being outside makes for sleepy children, and sometimes long nap times are the best times to sew. I’m hoping to make some progress on a few of my quilts this week.
Are any of your chicken owners? It is true that if we treat them like our pets and pick them up and handle them carefully often enough that they’ll be friendly?
Maybe if I sew them a quilt with this great chicken fabric, they’ll understand how much we enjoy having them around right now. 😉
The egg fabric is adorable! It is definitely something I could see myself buying, but I too am trying to whittle down my stash! 🙂
As for chickens, I think it is true! My in-laws have 3 chickens and they are adorable. They will walk up to you and squat down until you pick them up when they want to be held. They also follow my mother-in-law around when she mows the lawn. Sometimes, they will try to come inside the house if the back door is left open. They are very lovable! Enjoy your new pets!
Ha! I love this Stephanie! I’m glad to know some people have become good friends with their chickens. I’m hoping ours are like your in-law’s chickens. So fun! 🙂
