She’s almost five, and I’m about finished with her baby quilt. I’m ahead this time. 🙂
Then Came June has been one of the most inspirational quilters for me. Her color combinations and pattern combinations move me outside my comfort zone. (Remember, everything I used to make was low volume.) Someone recently asked what changed. My quilts keep getting brighter and brighter. And I’m still not sure I’ve actually landed what I like best. My preferences seem to change with each new quilt I start.
She started another Checkered Garden quilt last summer. It’s a free pattern by Film in the Fridge. Even though I’ve made it before, once I saw Megan’s new version of the quilt, I started another one at home. I loved her’s.
I gave myself permission to use my favorite fabrics. I didn’t have a color palette in mind. I simply started pulling any fabric off my shelf that I aesthetically liked.
I pulled many of my left over fabrics from Then Came June’s basics bundle that I bought years ago. (Here’s one still for sale.) I also have a post that lists out all the individual fabrics. You’ll see lots of the Manchester fabric in violet in the quilt top I made. It’s the one right on top in my picture below.
The rest? I pulled a lot of Ruby Star Society and Heather Ross on my shelf that I’ve let sit for a long time. They’re very different designers, but I put them together and loved the eclectic nature of the two paired together. You’ll also spot one of the Rifle Paper Co florals. Those came in a rayon, and I can’t say I’d recommend using rayon in a quilt, but I love the pattern.
A lot of the fabrics are quite old, and I’m sure many of the Heather Ross fabrics are already too hard to find. While almost everything in this quilt came from my stash I did browse a couple Etsy shops and added in a few ‘new to me’ prints. I wanted a scrappy quilt with lots of variety.
I found a lot of Ruby Star Society prints at Plain Jane’s and Co.
I found a really great mix of Heather Ross and Ruby Star Society at Shop in the Making.
I purchased fabric at both and was happy with the fabrics and customer service.
I think I’m going to hand quilt this one. If you check back in a year, the quilt may be finished by then.
I also already purchased the backing. I decided on Neon Neppy in Denim. It’s the light blue you see in a few places on the quilt top.
I also started a pillow cover for the shop in the same fabrics! It’s fun seeing the same combinations in log cabin type different pattern.
