This was a fun one, friends. The pattern is called the Big Patch Quilt by Hopewood Home.
I was first drawn to Susan’s (Hopewood Home) aesthetic style. Her eclectic feed on Instagram is charming, and her fabric choices are one of a kind. I love her quilt inspiration. Her gardens are stunning. And I’ve saved numerous pictures of her home decor for inspiration in my own home.
The process for piecing this quilt is, obviously, so different than the tedious and often monotonous process of putting together a detailed quilt block. Since this quilt is made from such large pieces of fabric, the top goes together exceedingly fast. For me, though, the entire mental process of how the fabrics work with each other is so different. Not only do I want the fabric to play well together, but I also want each individual fabric to be able to stand alone.
From the beginning, I was planning to use this quilt on our bed in our master bedroom. Since I would be seeing it all the time, I finally used my coveted Outback Wife fabric. I love that floral fabric something fierce. I think it’s beautiful.
While most of these fabrics were taken from a stack I purchased long ago from Field and Cloth, the binding was a recent purchase from Liz Taylor Handmade. The color is Parisian Blue from Art Gallery Fabrics. It’s a beautiful soft blue.
The quilting is entirely done by hand. I started hand quilting a few years ago, and I have not looked back yet. Hand quilting is slow, and it often takes me a year to finish a quilt, but I still find immense satisfaction and reward in the finished project.
As with most projects, there are a few things I would change with the fabrics. And I did my fair share of ripping apart seems when I decided to remove one bold floral I originally had in the mix. But this quilt has meaning for me because I made it with my own two hands. I’ll treasure it for a while…until I make another one to replace it. 🙂
