Completely finishing a quilt is taking longer and longer for me. Hand quilting definitely slows down the process, but the flowers in my yard, precious children growing out of nap times, and too many books to read these days are also willingly taking up my quilting time.
It is hard for me to be inside while there is so much to enjoy outside right now. We’ve had a relatively mild summer so far and beautiful evenings have become the norm.
Every time I sit at my sewing machine, my four year old son comes in to ask if I can sew him something. This usually entails him “sorting” all my fabric scraps as well. A couple years ago, I finished an economy block quilt for my oldest son, my middle son does not yet have a quilt, but I just finished this quilt for my third son simply because he has asked so much for one.
My second son has since requested a quilt, but boy it’s hard to leave the florals sitting on the shelf much longer awaiting a quilt for my daughter.
Alas, we’ll move onto more important details at this point. This is an amazing free pattern by Film in the Fridge. It’s her Checkered Garden Quilt Pattern.
I’m tempted to make another one with the exact same pattern with my hoarded Ruby Star Society prints.
I used a lot of Heather Ross fabrics, a mix of solids, and I added in a few additional textures like peppered cottons.
For the back and binding, I used a print called Sprinkle by the old Cotton & Steel designers (prior to the ladies shifting over to Ruby Star Society.) I love the cobalt blue these days.
Even though the hand quilting is slow and tedious, I still enjoy it, and it’s in process on multiple other quilts at home right now.
It feels good to finish a project…especially when it’s so very treasured by a special four year old blond haired boy.
