Most of the quilts I make are larger than twin sized. Making this throw sized quilt top for my three year old was a pleasant (and quite quick) endeavor.
This pattern is called Checkered Garden Quilt. It’s a FREE tutorial by Ashely from Film in the Fridge. (If pictures in the tutorial don’t show up for you, open her tutorial in a different browser. The images don’t show up in Firefox for me, but they come up just fine in Safari.)
After the first block, this quilt was smooth sailing. It’s a great and relatively simple pattern to follow.
If I could offer any advice, choose fabrics that are small scale prints. The squares are 2 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. Any solids are perfect. Small stripes or dots are great for this quilt. The smaller frogs and apples…perfect.
The owl in the boat playing the guitar? Not a great fabric for this quilt. Obviously you can’t see the picture. This is something so simple, but I didn’t think it through well before diving into this quilt.
You can see here a variety of Heather Ross prints I purchased a couple weeks ago. I bought almost all of them from Modern Violet on Etsy, but it appears she is running low on many prints.
Connecting Threads appears to still have lots of her new 20th Anniversary line in stock!
The red is Kona in Flame.
The green is Kona in Kiwi.
The yellow is Bella solids in Yellow.
The light blue is Bella solids in Ruby Ice.
Even though it’s not completely finished, I have one very happy three year old who’s been not so patiently waiting for a his very own quilt.
Have a good week, friends!
Keli, this is a beautiful quilt and it does look easy… thank you for sharing ๐
